Finding the true spirit of Christmas in the hinterlands of Rajasthan.

[IT] Lo spirito natalizio: la magica e quasi mitica sensazione di essere sopraffatto da positività, ottimismo e desiderio di gioire della propria fortuna con tutti. La voglia di essere circondati dalle persone che amiamo e di condividere con loro un segno di apprezzamento per aver reso le nostre vite migliori con la loro presenza. Mentre in un mondo ideale questo sarebbe vero per le persone di tutto il mondo, nel nostro mondo questo non è che un sogno lontano per molti. Di recente, ho avuto la possibilità di andare a Pushkar, una piccola città del Rajasthan, nella parte nord-occidentale dell’India. Conosciuta per il suo ambiente rurale spirituale e meraviglioso, la principale fonte di reddito della città dipende dal turismo. Grazie al turismo, la città ha visto molti sviluppi negli ultimi dieci anni, ma la mancanza di industrializzazione significa carenza di infrastrutture e opportunità, specialmente per le famiglie economicamente svantaggiate. Quando poi ci sono bocche da sfamare, l’istruzione viene messa da parte. Ma se i bambini – il futuro di una famiglia e di una comunità – non hanno l’opportunità di sviluppare le loro capacità, il loro destino continerà a ripetersi.

Il mio recente viaggio a Pushkar mi ha aperto gli occhi sul valore delle iniziatve realizzate da organizzazioni come AFLIN mi ha fatto ricordare che cosa il Natale dovrebbe essere.
AFLIN, tra i vari progetti, sostiene e finanzia l’educazione di molte bambine di Pushkar, che provengono da famiglie che nella maggior parte dei casi non hanno le risorse per mandare i loro figli a scuola. AFLIN non solo supporta queste famiglie nel sostenere l’istruzione scolastica dei figli, ma le aiuta anche a capire il valore e la necessità di educarli. Ho avuto la possibilità di incontrare alcune di queste famiglie mentre ero a Pushkar e la loro gentilezza di fronte alle difficoltà, la loro gioia nel vedere i loro figli ricevere istruzione e le loro speranze per il loro futuro è stata un’esperienza che rende davvero più umili. Il 24 dicembre, alla vigilia di Natale, ho avuto il piacere di incontrare 38 bambini (principalmente bambine) in un evento organizzato da AFLIN per festeggiare il Natale, divertirsi e promettersi un futuro migliore.

Priyanka e Ramesh, i volontari locali, hanno svolto un ottimo lavoro nell’organizzazione di attività per i bambini. Conoscevano i bambini, capivano le loro esigenze e li coinvolgevano durante la festa. I bambini si sono divertiti moltissimo, hanno partecipato pienamente e condiviso con gioia. La mia interazione con loro mi ha lasciato sbalordito dalla saggezza delle parole delle più grandi e dal sorriso e dalle azioni delle più piccole. Riuscivo a sentire la loro eccitazione per il loro futuro, le loro speranze di realizzare i loro sogni e la loro gratitudine per la possibilità che gli era stata data (una possibilità rispetto a molte possibilità che la maggior parte di noi è normale e che spesso diamo per scontato). Come parte dell’evento e per commemorare l’occasione, i bambini hanno realizzato alcuni disegni che sono stati utilizzati per decorare un piccolo albero di bouganville che è stato piantato in un giardino per celebrare la festa e che crescerà insieme a questi bambini e ai loro sogni. Un giorno questo albero diventerà solido, alto, orgoglioso e fiorito proprio come loro. I disegni erano bellissimi e mostravano il talento di questi bambini. Dopo tutti i giochi e le attività, è stata tagliata una grande torta natalizia e abbiamo distribuito portasapone con saponi, spazzolini da denti e dentifricio alle ragazze, gentilmente donati da Wishing Well di Mumbai. Questo ricordo è stato reso ancora più speciale dall’eccitazione e dall’entusiasmo dei bambini. Insieme possiamo fare di più. Questo è il vero senso della condivisione e della solidarietà.

Questa vigilia di Natale è stata davvero speciale e di vero spirito natalizio, quella sensazione magica era viva per me e per questi bambini così pieni di positività, ottimismo e speranza per la buona fortuna di tutti, lasciando a tutti, a me incluso, un’allegria festosa.

[EN] Christmas spirit, the magical and almost, mythical feeling of being overcome with positivity, optimism and the desire to spread one’s good fortune with everyone. The desire to be surrounded with people we love and to share a token of appreciation with them for making our lives better with their presence. While in an ideal world this would be true for people all around the globe, in our world this is but a far dream for many. I recently had the chance to go to Pushkar, a small town in Rajasthan, in the north-western part of India. Known for its spiritual and beautiful rural setting, the town’s primary source of income is dependent on tourism. Thanks to tourism, the town has seen a lot of development in the past decade but the lack of industrialization means that there is still a lack of infrastructure and opportunities, especially for the economically backwards class. Education takes a backseat when there are mouths to be fed but if the kids – the family’s future – are not given an opportunity to develop their skills, the same story will keep on repeating itself. However, my recent trip to Pushkar was not only any eye opener on the progress being made at the grassroots thanks to organizations like AFLIN, but also a reminder of what Christmas is truly about. AFLIN, amongst their other projects, has been supporting and funding the education of many girls in Pushkar, who come from families that in most cases do not have the resources to send their child to school. AFLIN not only helps these families send the kids to school but helps them understand the value and necessity of educating their daughters. I was able to meet some of these families while in Pushkar and their kindness in the face of hardships, their joy in seeing their kids getting education and their hopes for their kid’s future was a truly humbling experience. On Christmas eve, I had the pleasure of meeting 38 children (mostly female) in an event organized by AFLIN for the girls to celebrate Christmas, to have a good time and as a milestone for them while they rise towards a better future. Priyanka and Ramesh, the local volunteers, stepped up to the task and did a great job of organizing activities for the kids. They knew the kids, understood their needs and kept them engaged during the event. The kids for their part enjoyed tremendously, participated fully and shared graciously. My interaction with the kids left me stunned at the wisdom in the words of older kids and smiling at the actions of the younger ones. I could feel their excitement for their futures, their hopes of fulfilling their dreams and their gratitude for the chance they are beings provided (a chance as compared to many chances that most of us are given and that we take for granted). As part of the event, and to commemorate the occasion, the kids made some drawings which were then used to decorate a small Christmas tree that was planted to mark the festival and will grow along with these children and their dreams to one-day stand solid, tall and proud. The drawings themselves were beautiful and a display of the talent these kids possess. After all the games and activities, a big Christmas cake was cut and we have distributed soap dishes with soaps, toothbrushes and toothpaste to the girls, kindly donated by Wishing Well from Mumbai. This memory was made all the more special by the kids’ excitement and eagerness. Together we can do more. This is the true sense of sharing and solidarity.This Christmas eve truly was special and Christmas spirit, that magical feeling mentioned earlier was well and alive in these kids so full of positivity, optimism and hope for everyone’s good fortune, leaving everyone around including me with a bit of festive cheer.
